Voices from London

Film by Ross Domoney & Christina Rebel.

On the 15th of October 2011, protestors gathered outside St Paul's Cathedral in London as part of the Occupy London Stock Exchange movement. As the sun beamed down on those gathered with unseasonal intensity, there was a palpable sense of cause and necessity.

The crowd buzzed with a sense of optimism, energy and organisation. Within the first few hours of the protest first aid, kitchen and toilet facilities had all been established. Process groups were meeting to express their concerns, speakers were provided with microphones that were amplified from megaphones and a large range of well-informed views and solutions were discussed.

The driving cause was to address the inequalities within society- inequalities that are seen as real and significant threats to individuals, communities and the biosphere and which require serious action and change. There was a clear will amongst those gathered for a modified economic model with new measures to deal with 'corporate greed'.

The necessity of the protest was driven by a sense of disenfranchisement. The overriding sense was that 99% of the individuals who make up society are not represented through current channels of political decision-making. There were demands for social justice policies that would have greater regard for youths, families, as well as future generations and a desire to create a more participative democracy.

This positive, peaceful and proactive demonstration was a credit to all who took part. This video aims to capture the thoughts, words and motivations of the protestors so that more people can understand exactly what they stand for. From this impressive and solid starting point, and with the key issues clearly identified, there is now a great sense of anticipation for the practical solutions and next steps that those gathered can generate.
